Dogs resembling the Great Dane have been seen in drawings in Egyptian tombs dating back to 2200 BC. They were shorter of leg and resembled mastiffs in body type. These types of dogs made their way via traders to many other countries. It was in Germany that the breed was further developed into the dog that we recognise today. It is thought that the original mastiff type was crossed with a greyhound to give the agile, slender dog that is known as a Great Dane

While their origins may be debate, it is clear that it is thought the dogs originated in Germany. Early in their development, they were used as watchdogs and guards, and as such, are well known for their guardian instincts. The origins of the name "Danes" is not known, but engenders a lot of confusion.
It is thought that the breed was named after the city of Dan,suggesting that the dog came from the Peninsula of Germany and not Denmark.
  They are tall with a long body, but lean bones and stays surprisingly healthy. Their heads are large and are proportionate to their bodies. They weigh around 80 to 135 pounds. This makes them not only chesty, but well proportioned. As mentioned, they originated in Germany. Therefore, their legs are very strong. What is so special about this kind of breed is that they are good candidates for mountain tops. This is because they can resist extreme elements like temperatures drops and can literally fight their way up. While this kind of fighting is evident in the movies, this is the kind of situation that they were made to face. problem in the bloodline.  Families that choose to have Great Dane dogs as pets should take into account that they need lots of room for exercise. They are not that suitable for small apartments. .
These dogs are heavily protective of their territory or object of attraction. Intruders will have to use up their aggression against them. Yet, they are very protective of their owners or main owners. They can be very vocal when feeling threatened, or feeling fear.
